Society reeks with stigmas on the way women dress and their character. Too revealing – you're a slut. Too modest – you're a prude. We're beyond over it. Public Service Announcement: Women should feel empowered to dress the way that makes them feel most comfortable and confident in themselves.
Which brings us to a style of dressing that has been whole heartedly embraced by some of the biggest names out there (Victoria Beckham ring a bell?) Modest dressing.
Recently, we partnered with Sara from Simple Extravagance Boutique who celebrates modesty in all forms. In conversation with her, we learned that modesty is not just a religious style but has taken on a whole new form in what we call Modern Modesty – the sense of dressing modestly just because that's how you feel most comfortable.
But HOW exactly can you style modest looks in a contemporary way? Below, our guide.
1. Define what modest means to YOU
While some people feel comfortable wearing looks totally loose from their body, you might find your version of modesty includes accentuating your waist. And you know what? That's okay. Your style should be about what makes YOU feel most comfortable and nothing else.
2. Add trendy accessories
Gorgeous accessories can bring your aesthetic to life and complete the look. Take a cue from Sarah and add a pop of color to a classic black and white maxi. Shop some of our favorites below.
3. Chic hairstyles are key
Don't let your hair weigh you down. Experiment with bold styles – maybe even a subtle pop of blue like Vicki.
4. Shoes, shoes, shoes.
Shoes are not only the perfect way to bring together an elegant look – but they are also a great way to bring a modern touch to a classic silhouette.
5. TAKE CUES FROM YOUR STYLE ICONS
Well hello Jackie-O! Looking to classic fashion icons who embraced their own sense of modesty is just what Cherelle did with this look.
